Film H&D characteristic curve: density, gamma, latitude, base+fog

Optical density plotted against log relative exposure, showing base plus fog at the toe start, the toe, the straight-line portion whose slope is the film gamma (contrast), the shoulder and Dmax saturation. The straight-line exposure range is annotated as the film latitude; a steeper slope means higher contrast and narrower latitude. A faster (higher-speed) film has the same shape but is shifted to the left because it needs less exposure.
