Deterministic vs stochastic dose-response

Two aligned dose-response panels. Left (deterministic tissue reactions): severity against dose is zero below a threshold dose, then rises with dose. Right (stochastic effects such as cancer and hereditary): probability against dose is a straight line from the origin with no threshold (linear no-threshold, LNT); severity is independent of dose.
